Instructor Guide: All about Grading
The Gradebook in Canvas is a tool designed to assist instructors in managing and recording student grades. Depending on the Grade display type, you can view grades for each assignment as points, percentages, complete/incomplete, GPA scale, or letter grade.
Please note the following regarding the Gradebook:
- Display of Graded Items: Only published graded assignments, discussions, quizzes, and surveys appear in the Gradebook. Not Graded assignments are excluded.
- Default View: The default Gradebook view shows all students simultaneously, but you can also view students individually in the Individual Gradebook. Be aware that the Individual Gradebook may not support all Gradebook settings and options.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: The Gradebook supports several keyboard shortcuts for efficiency:
- Press "S" to sort the grid based on the currently selected column. Student names and Notes columns sort alphabetically, while other columns sort by grade from low to high.
- Press "M" to open the menu for the currently selected column.
- Press "Esc" to close the menu for the currently selected column.
- Press "G" to open the Assignment Detail page for the currently selected assignment.
- Press "C" to open the Grade Detail tray for the currently selected assignment.
It's important to note that in courses with multiple graders, the Gradebook retains data in the browser until the page is refreshed. Changes made by other graders in the Gradebook or SpeedGrader are not dynamically updated, so it's essential to refresh the page to ensure you have the most up-to-date information.
