Student Guide: Create a Video Discussion Reply on Canvas
This tutorial will walk you through the steps for adding a video to your discussion reply on Canvas.
You have two options to record/upload a video reply to a Canvas discussion forum:
Upload/Record Media:
-
Go to the discussion forum and select Reply.
-
Select the blank rich content editor and then select the media icon from the toolbar.
-
You would have the option to upload from your computer or record a video via the tool.
-
Computer - Drag a video file and then select
Submit.
Note:
Please do not upload any files larger than 500 MB. (Learn more about the Canvas supported media file types.)
Record videos via Zoom - All Penn GSE students have free Zoom Pro licenses. Please use your PennKey username to sign in at https://upenn.zoom.us/.
Record - Be sure to allow Canvas to access your mic and web camera in your browser. Then you can start recording and save the video.
Click the Post Reply button.

Panopto:
- Go to the discussion forum and select Reply.
- Select the blank rich content editor and then select the Panopto icon from the toolbar.
- A window will open up to ask for your consent to the copyright of video recordings at Penn. Select Accept and refresh your browser so the content can display properly.
Note: For first-time Panopto users, please allow pop-ups from Penn Canvas on your browser.
- By default, you would see on the dropdown list at the top as Everything. You also have the option to Choose, Upload, or Record videos.
-
Choose – If you have existing videos you can choose from the list that appears. If there’s none, it means you do not have existing videos in Panopto.
-
Upload – If you have already recorded a video and it is saved on your computer, you can select Upload and you will be prompted to locate a video recording saved on your computer. Follow the prompts until your uploaded video shows up.
-
Record – If you need to record a video from scratch, select Record. Provide a name for the video, and choose Panopto for Windows/Mac or Panopto Capture.
-
Panopto for Windows/Mac – This option requires the Panopto Recorder software to be installed on your computer. If you have already installed it previously, you can select Launch App. If you have not installed the application yet, you need to select the Download link and install the application on your computer.
-
Panopto Capture – This option does not require software installation and will run Panopto in your web browser. The option does not keep a local copy of your recording on your computer. If your recording stops midway due to a technical issue, you would have to re-record again.
- Once you have uploaded or recorded your video, you can close the Panopto window. Your video should now be displaying in the discussion reply that was previously empty. It may show a message that says that the video will be available soon/is being processed. Once it is done processing, the video will be playable.
- Select Post Reply.
